The History of Christmas Stamps: 1898-Modern Day
While Christmas’ origins began during the time of the Roman empire, the first Christmas postage stamp appeared in 1898. And even then, Christmas stamps didn’t really take off until the 1930s, where it was common to see scenes of the Nativity, Santa Claus, angels, snowmen, etc.

1898: The Year the First Christmas Stamp Was Issued
The first Christmas stamp, issued in 1898, was a 2-cent Canadian stamp, depicting the Mercator map and the text, “XMAS 1898.” That first stamp was issued on Christmas Day, 1898. However, it wasn’t until 1937 in Austria when the next two stamps with a Christmas theme would appear on the scene.
